On the fifth anniversary of the destruction of Juukan Gorge, Yindjibarndi CEO Michael Woodley reminds Australians that similar devastating events are happening all the time, and he calls for stronger “baseline” protection for Aboriginal heritage across Australia. In the Pilbara, the scale of iron ore extraction has increased 5-fold over 20 years, leading to widespread loss of ancient heritage sites going back 50,000 years or more.

Mr Woodley told the ABC: “We have been living with these types of Juukan Gorge-like incidents on everyone’s country since the establishment of mining on our country, and it’s not going to go away.
“We have 55,000-year-old sites that can speak to our long involvement and establishment to our land.”
